Microsoft offered the "optional" Windows 11 24H2 update to users in October 2024. With the new announcements, it seems that this update has been made mandatory for all users.
A Troubled Start
The 24H2 update caused game performance and system stability issues for some users. In particular, games such as Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series and Star Wars Outlaws experienced crashes or unresponsiveness problems. For this reason, Microsoft temporarily stopped the update and applied compatibility blocks to prevent the update from coming to problematic devices.
Mandatory Update
Following the fixes, Microsoft made the 24H2 update mandatory for all users with a major update described as a "full code change." It is stated that this process may take longer than previous updates. For this reason, users are asked to have their devices turned on and connected to the internet.
Could There Be a Better Solution?
This "full code change" seems to mean reinstalling Windows. It is possible to revert to the old version in case of a problem, but a more practical solution could be considered: The current Windows version could be kept as a backup for a certain period of time after the update and could easily be started from this version in case of a problem (like dual boot). This would save users the trouble of installing from scratch and reduce the risk of losing data. I probably won't reach for the update button, but my laptop will probably update itself after a while.
Final Thoughts
I hope everything goes well and you don't lose too much time (and data also) within this update process. Moreover, I still want to warn you by nagging you: Always remember to back up your data in case of possible problems. :)))
